The origin of the word Hogmanay is obscure thought to have been introduced to Scotland through the Auld Alliance with France. Incorporating a mixture of traditions from the pagan Norse celebration of the winter solstice and customs from the Gaelic New Year's celebration of Samhain.

As many of the events need tickets - be sure to purchase them in advance to avoid any last minute panic! At midnight there is a spectacular firework display in front of Edinburgh Castle. The best views are from Princes Street, but you can also enjoy the view from any of the hills which surround the city.
